Arcing across
sea and land, the Internet has clothed the earth in a magical new aura.
Understanding
the Arcs
The arcs
on this poster provide a detailed map of the international routes
with the largest amount of transmission capacity dedicated to Internet
services in 2000. Arcs are color coded by bandwidth, with red assigned
to
the paths having the highest capacity. Top United States domestic routes
are
also shown. Here is the map legend which appears on the poster:

The international data were compiled by TeleGeography, Inc. and include
over
seventy paths between cities that were linked by circuits with at least
400
Mbps of Internet bandwidth. The largest route is London - New York with
over
26,500 Mbps, followed by London - Paris with over 24,000 Mbps. Arcs within
the United States map Internet transmission capacity between metropolitan
areas. Data were compiled by Anthony Townsend, Global Network Analysts.
There are over forty paths with capacity greater than 20,000 Mbps with
the
top four routes (Washington - Philadelphia ; New York - Philadelphia;
San
Francisco - Sacramento; and Los Angeles - San Diego) having at least 40,000
Mbps each.
